Why, yes, this is the biggest lens you can find in Hawaii, for rent at Hawaii Photo Rental. Its the stellar EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM, properly mounted on a Gitzo tripod fitted with the mandatory Kirk King Cobra gimbal head, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV as the camera body.
Shot with a Canon 5D Mark II, with a EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM and lit with the Profoto 7b.
This shoot was funny. It was for Hawaii Photo Rental’s Groupon advertisement. I had planned the shoot for very early sunrise, as the sun was just coming up over the ocean. The plan was to be shooting at 7am, the timing which I correctly calculated to have the ideal amount of sun and light over the ocean, and, which as I hoped for, would be smooth with little wind. Great.
Awesome.
I told the model, clearly, confirmed, many times, be there 6:25 no later. I thought given many models consistent lack of temporal awareness, the extra 35 minutes would allow for potential bumps to be ironed out in time for me to get the shot.
Nope. Seems she didn’t take the morning traffic from Hawaii Kai into account, and we shot the first frame at 7:13, and after the usual warm up period refining the look, pose and lighting, the above shot was made at 7:38.

As you can see from this ideal shot of my assistant Christy Erikkson at 7:06 AM, the light really changes fast early in the morning.
Set it all up, all the gear, assistant, weather, camera, lens, model…..model…..model!!!!
Sigh.
